I've realized since I've been into coins/currency now for about a year(currency more or less last few months), I've developed such a strong appreciation for U.S History.. I never was a book learner(Although I do love Financial self help guides for some reason)..
I like to touch and feel history.. Knowing that these coins or notes have run through many different hands and/or were preserved through some of our greatest wars, makes me enjoy this hobby even more..
By having the Oregon Trail or Grant commem, I've looked into those people/incidents deeply to understand the story behind what was commemorated.
The North African/Hawaiian notes are another piece of history.. Goes to show me how smart the U.S was to have this currency in case of invasion so it could demonitized easily.
How do you guys view coins/currency as a History lesson to America?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

<< <i>DO you have the history through currency book yet? It is amazing. >>
No I do not, I'm not the biggest reader lately but I may have to check that one out..
Do you have it? If so, what have you learned from it generally?
If I had the money, I'd collect war memorabilia and antiques as well. Being a history buff and a hoarder is a bad, bad combination...
The coins take up the least space, and seem to hold their value pretty well though, so I can get away with it and not get yelled at too much by the wife.

My eyes have REALLY been opened since I started collecting early British coins. Before, I only knew about King George III, because of the Revolutionary War, and Victoria and Eliz II, but now I have learned quite a bit about all the monarchs back to their last civil war and Cromwell.
Go to the Darkside and really see some history!
